Why these movies had to be made

a filmography / bio on matt sesow

what follows are brief descriptions of three of my films. i like to characterize "seize the day" and "the box" as conversations with myself. they weren't intended for others to see, but are rather an examination of my condition. i suppose i was thinking a little of kafka and david lynch when i made "the box" and "seize the day"... they are my favorites, and highly personal. i don't expect everyone (maybe anyone) to understand fully what is being communicated with these films... they are diary entries.

"the trinket" was my attempt at telling a story -- it's not at the same level as "the box" or "seize the day" -- many people like it better than the other two. it was my film school (storyboard, script, actors, equipment, deadlines... etc...)

seize the day:

"seize the day" was my first attempt at using a pxl2000 camera. it was written, filmed and edited in one day. i play all three characters in the film... wrote and did all the camera work.... including the editing. did the entire thing alone in my apartment on a summer sunday afternoon/night in adams morgan (washington, dc)

"seize the day" is the story of dicky boy and ski mask man -- their interactions, dicky boy's sorrow over a lost bike, his self pity, and the eventual demise of dicky boy. it tells the tale of how one man's trash is another's treasure... how things aren't always as they appear... how some may try to hide their condition via less than convincing means (i.e. wigs, nose jobs, breast implants, artifical limbs).

"seize the day" went on to take fourth place at the 1993 wahington psychotronic film competion (tallying a perfect 10 from one of the celebrity judges).

the box:

"the box" was another one of my films shot using a pxl2000 camera. additionally, i used video editing hardware and software in order to add titling and minimal special effects (severed head, backwards masking, sub-titling, and voice alterations). this was my first "single handed film" production (a self assigned title for my film projects).

"the box" is the story of crumple butt and sweet trees -- their interactions, crumple butt's attempt to deal with his jealousy over sweet trees newfound admiration, and crumple butt's ultimate demise. it tells the tale of one man's attempt to change in order to be more like that which he is jealous of, rather than be himself, he goes on to alienate himself from the one he is trying to impress with his change.

"the box" went on to take fourth place at the 1994 washington psychotronic film competition and was part of a gallery ehibition ("superbia") at the washington project for the arts in washington, dc (1994).

trinket:

"trinket" was filmed using a standard 8mm "camcorder", using a pxl2000 for a flashback scene. "trinket" is a film for those that were threatened by their parents, while in a car, that if they didn't behave then they were going to be let out of the car... the hero in this story is also the object of jealousy from her mother (making the deed of abandonment easier).
